What is a Motor Control Center (MCC) Panel?

A Motor Control Center (MCC) panel refers to a system of centralized electrical panel that is used to regulate, protect and monitor electric motors in industrial and commercial plants. It is used to enclose motor starters, circuit breakers and contactors or overload relays and control devices in one enclosure. The MCC panels are used to simplify the operations of the motors, make them safer and also have reliable power distribution to a large number of motors by a single location.

How Does a Motor Control Center Panel Work?

A power supply is provided through the main electrical supply to an MCC panel, which splits it into separate feeders to individual motors. Individual motor feeders will have protection and control measures like MCB/MCCB, contactors and overload relays.

Once the motor is started the control circuit makes the contactor active, and power is applied to the motor. In case of any abnormal conditions such as overload, short circuit or phase failure, the protection devices will automatically isolate the motor, thus eliminating any form of damage and downtime.

Features of Motor Control Center (MCC) Panels

A compartmentalised and modular building.

Enables separation of individual motor feeders without affecting the whole panel, which enhances safety, maintenance simplicity and flexibility of the systems.

Heavy-duty enclosure design

Made of high-quality sheet steel with powder coating to resist tough industrial conditions, dust, moisture and mechanical pressure.

Various motor starters are available.

Supports starters based on DOL, Star-Delta, Soft Starter and VFD-based, which provides the ability to have accurate control over a motor depending on the load and application needs.

Superior quality protection equipment.

It is fitted with MCBs, MCCBs, contactors and thermal overload relays to provide dependable protection against short circuits, overloads as well as phase failures.

Efficient busbar system

Copper or aluminium busbars are made with even distribution of current, lower heat production and high short-circuit breaking capability.

Maintenance and expandability are easy.

Clearly identified parts, safe cable routing and additional space also enable problems to be troubleshot quickly and even expand the system in the future.

Superior quality protection equipment.

It is fitted with MCBs, MCCBs, contactors and thermal overload relays to provide dependable protection against short circuits, overloads as well as phase failures.

Benefits of Using a Motor Control Center (MCC) Panel

1. The control and monitoring of motions are centralized.

Allows operators to remotely control, protect and monitor various motors in a centralized place, which enhances efficiency in operations and responsiveness.

2. Improved electric and working safety.

Protective devices prevent the occurrence of electrical fault, motor damage, and fire risk making the working environment safer.

3. Less expensive installation and wiring.

Consolidated design reduces field wiring, reduces the time on installation and also reduces the total project and commissioning costs.

4. Greater reliability and availability of a system.

Faultless motor protection and controlled starting prevent wear and tear and this leads to fewer breakdowns and continuous operation.

5. Easy maintenance and troubleshooting.

Faults can be analyzed faster and system maintenance conducted without having to shut down the entire system, thanks to modular concept with feeders and clear separation of components.

6. Energy efficient operation of motors.

Simple methods of starting and regulating the motors help to keep power loss to a minimum and output power is optimised.

7. Future expansion capabilities.

MCs panels are easily upgradable or expandable to provide more motors as the requirements of the plant increase.
